NEWSLETTER 11 MAY 2012

By Penny Brouckaert | 14 May 2012

                                                                     11 May 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians

I trust this newsletter finds you well (no early winter sniffles?)

Early next week I will be sending out the exam timetables as well as a letter providing the examination period details. I spoke in assembly on Monday on the blinkers that racehorses wear to block out all distractions as they focus on the finish line. I encouraged the pupils to do similar, to block out distractions in this run in to the exam period. Please assist them by minimising distractions permitted at home.

We have just finished MOTA (Month of the Arts) with a ventriloquist, ballerinas and acrobats entertaining us. Mr Mackenzie and his team have succeeded in making culture accessible and exciting.

Have you bought your tickets for the three shows of our very own Cabaret?  For R25 on Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 3pm you have the opportunity to enjoy our hugely talented cast’s performance. Saturday night at 8 is the gala evening, adults only, at a cost of R40. Wine and snacks may be purchased. Our Cabaret is being performed at the Grahamstown Festival, please support in numbers.

On Tuesday at 8am the Grades 8 and 9’s submit their Science Expo projects. Parents are welcome between 3 and 7pm on Tuesday to view the amazing array and ingenuity of the projects. This is an academic highlight of the year.

We have a growing number of pupils who require scribes during the exams. Could you perhaps volunteer your time during the exam block? We are totally dependent on the community's goodwill in this regard. Please contact Mrs de Villiers at school should you be available.

The matrics were challenged, earlier this week, as to their level of exam preparation. We suggested to them that they were Competing, Cruising or in

Crisis. Those competing are working hard and performing to their level of ability. Those cruising are still doing things at the last possible minute and performing poorly. Those in crisis are those who are currently failing and making no visible effort to turn things around. On Wednesday morning this week at 6.30am, 60 of the competing pupils were seated, taking advantage of the extra-lesson offered by Mr Rob Douglas and Mr Hawtrey. Help at FHHS is extensive and available.

The school is playing some excellent sport at the moment. When fixtures are at home (please check the website) we play soccer matches on a Wednesday, Netball on a Thursday, Badminton and Squash on a Friday and Boys and Girls Hockey and Rugby (at home to Trafalgar High tomorrow) on a Saturday. The Senior Netball team leave on tour tomorrow and plans are underway for the Rugby Tour.

Yours sincerely

Newsletter 20 March 2012

By Penny Brouckaert | 22 Mar 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians

Allow me to wish you a school holiday that is a joy, not a burden, and an Easter that is a blessing, should you be celebrating it.

Staff - We say farewell to Mr Mann, once again. He came out of retirement this term past to assist us. His loyalty to and work with the school remains enormous in our recollections. Mrs Penny Brouckaert has proved a more than adequate interim replacement for Ms Groenewald, as PRO/Marketing. Her laughter and energy will be missed as she commences next term in a temporary capacity, teaching at the Primary School. Mrs Cherri Bell, former PR/Marketing for KEAG and Shark Spotters, takes up the reins at the start of the new term. We wish all three of them well!

Celebrations - The Girls Indoor Hockey and First Waterpolo Teams both completed a highly successful season, unbeaten. Congratulations to both. Riaan Shaw returned from the SA Triathlon Champs with a highly credible 12th place finish. A large number of our pupils are en route to the National Nippers and Surf Life Saving Champs, representing Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club. Go well. Our Fish Hoek Girl Guides and Rangers successfully completed the annual Kontiki challenge, placing 4th in construction and 12th overall. Congratulations to team leader Jess Blake and all the girls involved. The Variety Concert played to almost totally sold out audiences. The 29 performances were diverse and slick and showcased the enormous talent at our school. Mr Fourie is to be congratulated on yet another high calibre show, as is his hard working Grade11 committee.

Reports- This Newsletter accompanies your child’s academic report. Please go through it with care and take up the opportunity on Thursday the 12th of April to interact with us around their performance, at the Parents Evening. That same evening we host our Careers Evening with 35 exhibitors providing vital information for future career and study possibilities, do not miss it. Also included is the updated Term Two Calendar.

Skateboards - I have informed the pupils that skateboarding on the premises is not allowed. If pupils bring their boards to school they must be placed in their lockers and not carried around the school. You will no doubt have read of the death today of a long boarder on the roads above Franschhoek. Please encourage extreme caution.

Lost Property- Please ensure that your child’s clothing and equipment is marked and identifiable - the office has two large boxes filled with unclaimed “lost” items.  These will be donated to our second-hand uniform shop, from which we supply uniform to needy learners, and other charities, at the end of the first week of next term and on a monthly basis in future.  Please encourage your child to look for lost items in the office.

Duly Performed (DP) and not Duly Performed (NDP) - On your child’s report, you will notice that there is a tick next to either of the above. This indicates whether or not your child has met the minimum 80% attendance requirement in an extra-mural activity in order to pass the term by Fish Hoek High School standards.

Parking - My concerns around the traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoons are unresolved. Can I ask more parents to make use of the parking area at the top fields for both dropping and collecting. Please continue to be aware of the neighbours and of the red lines.

Cell Phone Dangers - Had I not been alert, I would have, twice in the last month, driven into a teenager of ours walking into the road, so engrossed on their cell phone that they were oblivious to traffic. Pupils continue to phone their parents during the day asking to be taken home, due to feeling ill. We simply cannot allow this. Pupils feeling ill must report to the secretaries, who will make contact with you.

Food Fair- We will be holding that wonderful evening, the Food Fair, this year on Saturday 21st of April, from 5-8pm. We will be holding it, weather permitting, at the amphitheatre at the back of the school, accompanied by live music and performances on our bandstand. It is followed at 8pm sharp by two top class comedians in the hall. This is a fundraising venture for the Cabaret Show we are performing at this year’s Grahamstown Festival. Your support at both events would be fantastic.

Pupils driving - Matrics with permission to park their vehicles at school may do so at the top fields only. From time to time pupils travel to sports fixtures with their own transport. If there is no organised transport, pupils with licences are welcome to drive themselves there. Parents are asked to always ensure that they are happy with whom and how their teens are travelling to away venues.

Anabolic Steroids

The newspapers have again expressed concern re’ school pupils using and abusing steroids in the eternal quest to be bigger and stronger. We have educated the pupils in this regard, as our first line of defence, but are adamant that it cannot and must not be tolerated. Steroids are a banned substance and as such fall under the School’s Drug Policy. If our random drug checks were to record a positive steroid sample, we would not hesitate to ban that pupil from his/her school sport.

Yours in education

Reports and BoG Elections

By Penny Brouckaert | 15 Mar 2012

Dear Parents

(1) BOARD OF GOVERNOR'S ELECTION

(2) PARENTS' EVENING

Reports for this term will be issued after the Board of Governor's election at 6pm on Thursday 22 March.

Discussions will be held with teachers on Thursday 12 April (3rd day of the second term) from 17:30 to 19:30. Your son/daughter may accompany you on that occasion as long as they are in uniform.

The usual booking system for appointments will be in operation. It works like this:

1.            Your child may collect an appointment card from the school office at the beginning of the next term.

2.            They may then book times with their teachers for you to see them. These will be recorded on the appointment cards.

3.         Please bring the appointment card with you on Thursday 12 April.

4.         It is not essential to have appointments, however if appointments are not made, you may only be able to see those teachers who have gaps in their schedules. It would be wise to establish the names of the relevant teachers beforehand.

Please take this opportunity of discussing your child's progress. (Please note that appointments for Parents Evening cannot be made by phoning the Admin office. The onus is on your child to make the appointments with their teachers on your behalf.)

Yours sincerely
