Home Fish Hoek High School

To Prospective Parents

The complex on 13th Avenue came into being in 1985 when, as a result of enrolment increases, the original Fish Hoek High School could no longer accommodate all the learners. The new building, designed in consultation with staff incorporated many of the best features of school design. The architect was Jack Barnett, also responsible for the Baxter Theatre. In recent years there have been many additions including the McCallum Sports Hall.

People, not buildings, however, produce good schools. For this reason, all concerned must work to develop traditions that will ensure the success of this School. The maintenance of high academic standards exists together with the effort to provide the most suitable schooling for every child. In this regard, the range of subjects offered is extensive.

In contrast to many other suburban schools, we also enjoy the privilege of serving a community in a specific geographic area. For this reason with parental backing we insist on certain dress and behaviour requirements and an involvement in the life of the area we serve.

Of paramount importance is our belief that education involves the whole child. The parents, the school and the community must combine to provide the opportunities necessary for the total development of the adolescent. To ensure that our part in the moulding process is effective, we encourage participation in extra-mural activities.

We subscribe totally to the policy of effective home-school communication. To facilitate this we offer an open-door policy that encourages parent interviews and consultations. Please do not hesitate to make use of these opportunities.

We strive to develop our own ethos.  Senior pupils are expected to behave as young adults and are treated accordingly.  This means, amongst other things, that learners are expected to take pride in their achievements, appearance and behaviour and accept the consequences of their actions.

Our objectives are that our School be characterised by:

1.      a recognition of the uniqueness of each learner;

2.      an emphasis on each individual taking responsibility for his/her own life;

3.      concerned caring;

4.      positive reinforcement in the form of praise and encouragement;

5.      high standards in all spheres of school life.
